Mary Maxfield (they/ she) is a researcher, educator, and writer, invested in LGBTQIA+ community formation in St. Louis, MO.

Mary is interested in social justice as it relates to LGBTQ+ experiences, space and place, and digital technology. Their current research examines LGBTQIA+ organizations in St. Louis that use media and arts to form community. In all her work, Mary strives to bridge academic research, creative arts, and practical social change.

 

Research

Mary’s current research focuses on local LGBTQIA+ organizations, such as choruses, theater groups, and book clubs, who use the arts to form community. Through oral history, interviews, and archival methods, Mary works to record and preserve the history of LGBTQIA+ St. Louis, with particular emphasis on lesbian and transgender stories.
