Not history as in over. Historic as in it matters.

As a researcher, I’m particularly interested in the creation and preservation of LGBTQ+ communities.

My proposed dissertation, “Tech Support: LGBTQ+ Networking, Analog Social Media, and St. Louis” examines networks forged by queer St. Louisans between 1990 and the present. Specifically, it considers LGBTQ+ networks that utilize media technologies rarely perceived in those terms, including archives, choral music, books, and writing groups.

Currently, I am calling on past and present members, volunteers, and supporters of CHARIS, the St. Louis Women’s Chorus, to participate in this research. Here’s how you can help:

1)    Talk to me!

I’m interested in interviewing individuals and small groups about their CHARIS experiences. This includes current members, past members, supporters, folks who came to one rehearsal, folks who’ve been involved since the beginning, folks who identify under the LGBTQ umbrella, folks who don’t, etc. Due to COVID, all interviews are currently being conducted remotely, and I’m happy to arrange the format that works best for you (e.g. phone, email, Zoom, etc).

2)    Show me stuff!

I’m interested in seeing any materials you have connected to the chorus, including programs, flyers, t-shirts, video footage, sheet music, photographs, social media posts, props, costumes… the list goes on. Basically, I am deeply curious about the contents of your basement/ closet/ file cabinet/ garage, etc. Please reach out to arrange a way to share materials virtually (e.g. send pictures, etc) or to set up a socially distant pick-up and return.

3)    Pass this on!

If there’s someone involved or previously involved with CHARIS that you think might be interested and willing to help, please share this with them.
